A series of "umlauts" or mutations affect vowels in Old English, which are standard changes.

The following standard vowel changes are found, both with short and long vowels, the long vowel mutating to its long counterpart and vice versa.

a => æ faran; he færþ
a => e standen; he stent
o => e dohtor; dehter
u => y mus; mys
æ => e [example?]
e => i cweþan; he cwiþþ
ea => ie eald; ieldra
eo => ie freond; friend
